Nasi Goreng - Indonesian Fried Rice
Nasi Goreng is considered to be the national dish of Indonesia, but it is also commonly eaten in Singapore and Malaysia. Nasi Goreng means fried rice, and there are many different variants to this recipe in Indonesian cuisine. As many people know, the Netherlands and Indonesia have had a long (and sometimes complex) relationship, so I have been eating and preparing this dish for years!
The Nasi Goreng has cabbage, carrots, freshly-grated turmeric, and is topped with an omelet or fried egg. In addition I'll include other optional toppings such as home-made seroendeng (which is a mixture of coconut, peanuts, and crispy fried shallots), cilantro, lime, peanut sauce and cucumber.
This week there will be three variations:
Standard: with shrimp paste for flavor/depth and a fried egg* on top, Also includes freshly-made kroepoek (shrimp crackers) on the side. (my kids think kroepoek is the best part of the dish :) ($21.00)
Contains: Shrimp, Gluten, Eggs, Peanuts, SoyVegetarian version with no shrimp paste or kroepoek ($20.50)
Contains: Peanuts, Eggs, SoyVegan version that also omits the Egg ($19.50)
Contains: Peanuts, Soy
If you want to spice it up to your liking, add some sambal tomato or your favorite hot sauce.
Order is per portion.
*Consuming raw or undercooked eggs may increase your risk oof foodborne illness.
